Day 1: What Is Collagen and Why Yogis Should Care?
As a woman approaching 50 and moving through menopause, I’ve been paying closer attention to how my body feels and not just during yoga, but in daily life. I’m noticing subtle changes: more stiffness in the mornings, longer recovery times, and a deeper awareness of my joints and connective tissue. Yoga continues to be my anchor, but lately I’ve been curious about what additional supportive routines might look like during this phase of life.
That curiosity has led me to start learning more about collagen. I’ve just ordered my first collagen supplement for a trial, and before I even begin taking it, I wanted to slow things down and understand what collagen actually is and why it’s often mentioned in conversations about aging, movement, and joint health.
Over the next 10 days, I’ll be sharing information, reflections, and research as I explore the relationship between collagen and yoga. After that, I’ll move into sharing my personal thoughts, views, and lived experience over a 30-day collagen trial, all through the lens of a long-time yoga teacher navigating midlife changes.
This is not about promoting a product or prescribing solutions. It’s about sharing a journey.

What Is Collagen?
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body, accounting for roughly 30% of our total protein content. It functions as a structural support system often described as the body’s internal scaffolding, helping maintain strength, elasticity, and integrity across many tissues.
Collagen is a major component of:
Fascia
Tendons
Ligaments
Cartilage
Bones
Skin
Blood vessels
While collagen is commonly marketed for skin health, its role in movement, joint support, and connective tissue resilience is especially relevant for those of us who practice yoga regularly.
Fascia: Why This Matters So Much in Yoga
Fascia is where this conversation becomes especially interesting for yogis.
Fascia is a collagen-rich connective tissue network that runs throughout the entire body. It surrounds muscles, organs, joints, and nerves, creating a continuous web that allows the body to move as an integrated whole rather than as separate parts.
In yoga, fascia influences:
How fluid or restricted a pose feels
How efficiently we transfer strength and stability
Our sense of connection, balance, and body awareness
Healthy fascia is hydrated, elastic, and adaptable. As we age and particularly during hormonal transitions like menopause fascia can become less supple and more rigid, contributing to stiffness and reduced mobility.
Yoga already plays a powerful role here. Slow, mindful movement, long-held poses, gentle loading, and breath awareness all help:
Hydrate connective tissue
Improve circulation
Support tissue elasticity
Yoga doesn’t just stretch muscles—it nourishes the entire connective tissue system.
Why I’m Exploring Collagen Now?
Collagen production naturally declines with age, and this process can be influenced by stress, sleep quality, hormonal changes, and lifestyle habits. As someone committed to moving well for life, I became curious about whether collagen supplementation—used thoughtfully—might offer additional support alongside a consistent yoga practice.
I want to be clear:
I’m not approaching this as a fix, a promise, or a shortcut. I see it as an experiment in self-care, grounded in awareness and curiosity.

From a yogic perspective:
Movement gives the body information.
Nourishment provides the materials.
Over time, I’ll be observing how these two elements may or may not work together for me.
Why I’m Sharing This Journey!
I’m not a healthcare professional. I’m a yoga teacher who has spent years listening to bodies my own and those of my students. Many women I work with are navigating similar transitions: changing energy levels, shifting mobility, and a desire to care for their bodies with kindness rather than urgency.
This series is for:
Women moving through later-life transitions
Yogis curious about connective tissue health
Anyone who appreciates hearing real experiences rather than quick answers
My hope is that by sharing information first, then my personal experience, this becomes something you can reflect on alongside your own journey, rather than something to follow or copy.
